This tutorial E-book is based on the long-standing experience of teaching railway operations and signalling at several universities and higher vocational training institutions in different parts of the world. It explains the fundamental principles all railway signalling systems have in common without focussing on specific national solutions.

In the 4th edition, besides some updates to keep up with the state of the art and minor corrections, the symbols used in signal diagrams have been replaced by a more generic design that fits better to an international textbook not focused on the principles of a particular national railway. The same symbols have been recently used in several international textbooks. As wished by many readers, I have now also added an index.
